Headlined by Apple Carplay/Android Auto and a new flagship trim.
The local division has given the long-running ute better infotainment technology and the addition of a new hero model.
The Nissan Navara Series 4 update most notably gains a new 8.0-inch Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment (AIVI) system featuring Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, standard from the second cheapest SL guise.
This replaces the archaic 5.0 and 7.0-inch systems in its predecessor; however, a CD player is no longer available.
The higher ST and ST-X grades now includes a built-in new TomTom navigation system as well.
Models SL up are also given some minor exterior alterations with the headlamp bezel changing from silver to black, ditto the side steps on the ST grade and above.
Furthermore, the Japanese automaker has also added a new special edition model in the line-up, dubbed the Navara N-TREK.
To battle with the likes of flagship Ford Ranger Wildtrack’s and Toyota HiLux Rugged X’s, the N-TREK is essentially a cosmetic pack, adding the muted hue to a range of elements — 18-inch alloy wheels; fender flares; alloy sportsbar; lower side body decals all-round the doors and tub; LED headlamp bezels; rear bumper; front grille; roof rails; and door handles — to the ST-X.
There is also the obligatory N-TREK badge on the tailgate along with black and orange accented side steps, wing mirror caps, and lower front facia.
Inside, leather ‘accented’ seats with orange fabric in the middle; orange stitching across the centre console, steering wheel, seats and front door armrests; power adjustable driver’s pew with lumbar; and heated front seats are added as well.
Grunt comes from the familiar 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel that outputs 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque with a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, while a single-turbo 2.3-litre with 120kW and 403Nm is on the entry-level RX.
Colours only include Cosmic Black, Slate Grey and White Diamond — the latter two are metallic cost options — and transmissions include either a 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed automatic across all variants.
The N-TREK is only sold in dual cab 4×4 form.
This new limited edition model follows on successful sales from the previous Series 3 ST Black and Silverline editions.
Other safety features carryover including a reversing camera and sensors, 360 degree Around View Monitor, ISOFIX attachment points, and the maximum 5-star ANCAP rating, albeit tested in the less stringent 2015 year.
Unlike the equivalent Europe offering, Series 4 still omits autonomous emergency braking (AEB) which is a pre-requisite to obtain the 5-star today, in addition to any form of active safety — namely blind spot alert, lane departure warnings or adaptive cruise control.
The base RX trim level is unchanged.
There are cab chassis, singe, king and dual cab options available to suit a range of budgets and needs.
The Series 4 range is covered by the company’s five year/unlimited kilometre warranty with capped priced servicing for the first six years or 120,000km.
The updated range is on sale now.
