Simply mobile.
Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Book S laptop at its Unpacked event in Brooklyn, bringing the Snapdragon 8cx processor, LTE availability and lightweight aluminium body.
The Book S debuts Qualcomm’s latest laptop-made Snapdragon 8cx octa-core processor at 7nm that clocks in at 1.8GHz and maximum 2.84GHz output, which is partly based on the Snapdragon 855 found on flagship smartphones such as the latest Note10.
Unlike previous attempts of a Snapdragon Windows 10 device, Samsung says that they have worked closely with Microsoft to optimise more applications to be compatible with the new ARM based chip.
The company claims a 40 per-cent improved CPU performance and 80 per-cent better graphics over its predecessor, the Galaxy Book S.
This allows the device to stay cool without the need for a fan, have a claimed up to 23 hours of video playback due to power efficiency, and be highly mobile with a aluminium frame on the top and base that weighs only 0.96kg and 11.8mm thin.
The ultra-portable mantra is reinforced with the availability 4G/LTE Cat.18 connectivity via a Nano SIM, allowing users to navigate the web and do work on the go without the need of connecting to potentially risky public Wi-Fi hotspots.
The Korean firm’s latest laptop builds on the Galaxy Book 2, which was a 2-in-1 style Surface Pro competitor, and should rival the likes of the Apple MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Laptop 2.
Additionally, the Book 2 has a full HD 13.3-inch TFT display (16:9 aspect ratio) with 10-point multi-touch, and comes in either Windows 10 Home or Pro depending on market.
I/O wise, there are a total of two USB-C ports — one on each side which also charges the 42Wh battery — a microSD card slot up to 1TB, and a headphone jack.
To complement the new 8cx CPU, 8GB RAM (LPDDR4X) is on board with either 256GB or 512GB SSD storage.
For authentication, a Windows Hello fingerprint scanner is embedded in the power button on the keyboard, while there is also a 720p webcam, AKG stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and a backlit keyboard.
The Book S will be available in Earthy Gold (similar to a pink hue) or Mercury Gray colours internationally and will hit from the beginning of fall in select markets, costing $999USD.
Whether it will be available in Australia is unconfirmed.
