Tesla cuts new car warranty to four-years in Australia

A warranty flip-flop.

Tesla’s Australian division has altered its ‘New Vehicle Limited Warranty’, halving the warranty to four-years for all new vehicles sold from February 1, 2019.

This replaces the previous eight year/16,000km warranty to only four-years/80,000km for all new Tesla Model 3, S and X’s from the second month of this year.

Though, it is worth noting that the separate battery warranty remains unchanged.

Model S and X batteries are covered for eight years, with the exception of original 60kWh manufactured before 2015 which is limited to eight-years/200,000km.

Model 3 is eight years/160,000 km, while the Model 3 with Long-Range Battery is eight years/192,000km — both require a minimum 70% battery retention to be eligible for warranty repairs.

This effectively means that Tesla no longer offers the longest warranty (in terms of years), now ousted by Kia Australia’s seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty.

It is worth noting that the warranty was previously doubled to eight years from March 30, 2018 to reflect the United States coverage period, but has now reversed.
