Android 10 unveiled alongside new branding

More formal, less tasty.

Google has rationalised its latest moniker, Android 10, and a new branding refresh on Friday for better consumer understanding.

The alphabetically-sorted code names based off sweets and treats for Android is no more; the tenth version of the mobile operating system is Android 10.

Google says this change is for consumers, especially in other languages, to better understand Android versions since not all letters are distinguishable from each other.

Clearer and now more relatable, Android 10 brings features such as refined navigation gestures, a dark mode interface, and support for foldable screens, just to name a few.

Skewing away from dessert names, it is a startling revelation as this year’s iteration was expected to start with a ‘Q’ given it was dubbed Android Q in all testing beta’s.

Furthermore, the Android branding has been given a more contemporary refresh with accessibility in mind.

The new logo design bears a refined colour palette — from green to black text — to make elements contrast for better readability, especially for visually impaired people.

The Android robot is highlighted more prominently, now embedded within the logo itself, along with tweaks to its behaviour of eyes and antenna’s when moving, and the ‘Android’ text itself is now a little rounder on the edges.

The new branding will launch with the release of Android 10, which is expected in September.
